Has Britain Got Talent? Episode 1
Just because the auditions for Britain’s Got Talent take place on a stage does not mean that sometimes they should be “staged”. I mean how stupid do the producers think it’s audience are to believe some of the scenarios that they come up with. I know that they are probably doing it all in the name of entertainment but when they put on a staged performance then it really damages any credibility the show has.
Last night saw the first episode of the forth series. I am watching it because apparently someone I know is going to be in it and I would love to see them on TV but he wasn’t in this week’s show.
The best talent in this episode was undoubtedly Tina and Chandi. The best dancing dog I have ever seen. I loved their performance and it was just wonderful to see. Judge for yourself:
The most questionable “talent” to make it through to the next round was someone under the name of Kevin Cruise; no relation to Tom Cruise we are assured but his act was only mildly entertaining. It was an overly camp performance based around someone who works on a cruise ship, in fact I thought the best bit was when he skated in on a miniature cruise ship because it looked so surreal. He was probably the worst who managed to get through to the next round because when you have set the bar so high with acts like the Tina and Chandi the dancing dog it is hard to believe that the judges thought that this was of the same calibre, but again you can judge for yourself:
Finally the most “staged” performance of the evening goes to Kieran Gaffney (hopefully no relation to Dean Gaffney). Here you can see an edited clip of the ordeal:
I am not saying that he isn’t talented but I think the way that this was done it tries to make a fool of the audience and it also tries to make the show seem a bit more interesting than it really is. I think you can clearly see signs that everybody is acting and are in on it because nothing about it seems very genuine. He auditioned last year and got through but didn’t make it to the live shows so he came back to try his luck again. It was a long drawn out story with interviews and clips from previous shows that he was on to build up to the actual performance. Anyone who has seen him before would know that he is pretty good little drummer boy so you wouldn’t suspect that he would come back a year later and be worse than before and yet this is exactly what happens. Are we supposed to believe that it was for real? The people who get through to the perform in front of Simon, Amanda and Piers have to go through numerous auditions to whittle down the contestants to a select few who would make for good entertainment value and this also includes the more obscure acts that are set up and are destined to fail. So for him to come out with his family to barely even tap his drum just wouldn’t have happened naturally and that is why I think this part of the show was orchestrated. When he came out with his family to perform and the audition goes embarrassingly wrong it seems like it must have been scripted to be this way so that he could come back yet again and really shine to make a spectacular end to the show and for him to appear to have triumphed over that initial rejection, but it is just perceived as being completely fake. This type of staged performance was happening all the time last year but I had forgotten that it was part of the show’s entertainment until now and to see it happening again is really disappointing. I would rather just watch people come out on stage and give their best performance, no second chances, no mockery, just sheer talent.
Acts like Tina and Chandi are what the show should be about!
