Has Britain Got Talent? Episode 4

I didn’t have any hopes for this week’s BGT. Last week’s X-Factor style episode left me feeling empty and confused and I wasn’t the only one to think so. What exactly is this programme trying to do? Why is it being dragged out to be far longer than it really needs to be? This week however was a return to form with better collection of auditions which took place in London and Glasgow.

It started off with one of the most entertaining and unique acts of this series so far. They were called Chippendoubles and were classed as a variety act. They came out on stage masked and cloaked and nobody really knew what to expect but as they danced and stripped off each of them revealed a celebrity look-alike hiding underneath. First up David Brent popped out and gave a rendition of his signature dance. As they revealed themselves they were accompanied with music to cement their identity, for instance the Will Smith lookalike sang Men In Black and Gordon Ramsay came out to Flash by Queen. It was a dubious talent but nobody could deny that it was a really entertaining performance. Maybe they’re not looking for talent but for someone with the entertainment factor instead. Maybe the show needs retitled.

Similarly Othelio managed to somehow entertain the audience with their absurd audition, no real talent to speak of it was just them fooling around to the audience’s amusement and that was enough for them to scrape through to the next round. It does seem to make a mockery of those who deserve to be in the next round based on a genuine talent. What was this show called again?

The most talented from this episode was Hayashi who chopped cucumbers, okay so maybe that doesn’t sound too skilled but he did it blindfolded and did I mention that he was wielding a samurai sword? He showed great stage presence and confidence as he demonstrated that his sword was for real and got a member of the audience to validate his blindfold. He then astonished everyone by chopping cucumbers that were very closely strapped to a willing helper Ben, we were all very aware of the danger here and that one false slip could have made a shish kebab of poor Ben, but luckily for him Hayashi’s talent prevailed and resulted in a spectacularly captivating performance.

Next up was Myztikal – the only act who’s name is much harder to spell than it is to pronounce. They were a dance act with a twist in that they would also be singing. I think that it is strange that nobody has tried auditioning like this before and maybe somebody could have done a better job because unfortunately for this act one of their songs didn’t flow and it resulted in the audition getting cut short. Despite this obvious flaw they were still given a second chance and go through to the next round. Sometimes I wonder what goes on in the mind of a judge.

Forth Valley Chorus featured albeit briefly but it was enough for me to take notice of them. Although I am not favouring singing acts in this contest I think this act could be the one of the few exceptions because I did think that they showed a good talent and it wouldn’t be suited to an X Factor style show. They seemed to have a great spirit but their their performance was only given a few seconds of airtime. I really hope to see more from them!

The show finished with another exceptional singing act but this was no ordinary singer! Janey Cutler was 80 years old and her audition film was undoubtedly the highlight of this week’s show. She initially felt a bit intimidated by the stage and the masses of people awaiting her but Ant adorably walked on stage with her. She had a quirky loveable manner that quickly won the audience over but when she said she was going to sing “No Regrets” it immediately conjured up images of her doing a Robbie Williams impression but thankfully she was referring to Edith Piaf’s song. It was a sensational performance! I didn’t suspect such an amazing voice from this timid lady. All her life she has somehow remained undiscovered and now her performance will be heard by millions of people, it’s a wonderful thought. I think she could be this year’s Susan Boyle – only better!! It was one of the most uplifting feel-good moments of the series. Judge for yourself:

All in all this week’s Britain’s Got Talent was so much better than previous weeks. Let’s just hope this quality continues throughout the rest of the series.
